Barwon Heads Beach, Where the River Meets the Sea

Barwon Heads is one of Victoria’s premier family beach destinations. Located right on the banks of the beautiful Barwon River Estuary – where the river meets the sea. This tidal broad water area is perfect for the littlies to have a splash, stand-up paddle-boarding or to launching a canoe and explore the winding Barwon and its small tributaries.

Barwon Heads also provides safe swimming for families along the shallow and sandy river foreshore and more challenging water for experienced surfers at Thirteenth Beach. A section of Thirteenth beach is patrolled daily during the summer peak and on weekends until Easter.

Walkers have the run of kilometres of sandy beaches any time of year.

Fishermen will also find plenty to catch, with the Barwon River boasting whiting, trevally, mullet and bream. Fish from the jetty, bridge, beach or boat.

Just over the bridge you will find Ocean Grove Main Beach. This is a long stretch of wide sandy beach bordered by rolling sand-dunes. It’s is a great spot to catch some easy waves for surfing and body boarding or take a stroll. The Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club patrols two sections of the beach during summer.
